Family Photography: Capturing Who You Are Right Now

May 27, 2026 0 60

Kids change fast. Embarrassingly fast. The three-year-old who refused to put on shoes before every outing becomes an eight-year-old with opinions about haircuts, and then somehow a teenager who doesn’t want to be in photos at all. Which is partly why family photography matters more than it gets credit for. Not because the moments are slipping away, though they are, but because who your family is together right now deserves to be documented.

We’ve done family sessions in Bandra apartments where the kids ran circles around everything, on the beaches of Juhu at low tide, in the middle of Sanjay Gandhi National Park on a weekday morning, and in family homes in Chembur where four generations sat in the same room. Every session looks different because every family is different.

How a Family Session Actually Works

We keep things relaxed on purpose. The kids don’t have to stand still. The grandparents don’t have to smile on cue. We spend the first part of any family photography session just letting everyone get comfortable with the camera before anything important gets captured.

What usually happens is this: the parents stop worrying, the kids start doing their own thing, and the actual personality of the family starts showing up in the frames. The chaos, the affection, the running commentary that never stops. Those are the pictures people want when they look back ten years from now. Not the ones where everyone is stiffly aligned and smiling at nothing.

We also take some time for quieter, more composed portraits. These are good to have. They’re the ones that go on the wall. But the candids are the ones that get pulled out on birthdays.

Extended Family and Special Occasions

Family photography in India often means a much larger group than the nuclear family unit, and we’re comfortable with that. Three generations, cousins, in-laws, everyone together for a reunion or a festival or just because it’s been a while. Large family sessions require a bit more coordination but the results can be extraordinary.

We also document family milestones. A baby’s first year, a parent’s retirement celebration, a sibling’s college send-off. These aren’t always events in the traditional sense but they’re chapters in a family’s story, and they’re worth having on record.

What to Expect and How to Prepare

Most family sessions run between one and two hours. Outdoor sessions in Mumbai work best in the early morning or late afternoon when the light is good and the heat is manageable. Indoor sessions at home are wonderfully relaxed and often produce our favourite results because you’re in your own space.

A few things that help: coordinate colours loosely rather than matching outfits exactly, don’t try to control what the kids will do, and plan for a post-session snack or something the family looks forward to. Happy, fed children who have something to anticipate are significantly easier to photograph than tired, underprepared ones. Trust us on this one.

If you’re thinking about a family photography session in Mumbai, whether for a special reason or for no reason at all, we’d love to be involved.
